Criminal masterminds arrested - babies can sleep in peace
October 25th, 2007

I don’t have a TV anymore but I occasionally watch a few episodes of shows I like online. I would usually use a site called TV Links but I noticed a few days ago that it was down. I checked yesterday and it was still down so I figured it was having pretty serious server issues or something. But I just read that the guy who runs the site has been arrested, as has the chap who runs a popular music file-sharing site called Oink. Both arrests took place in the UK.

This is how the BBC reported the Oink news. Apparently, the service was ‘hugely lucrative’. Which is presumably why the 24-year-old guy they claim is the criminal mastermind behind the scheme has a full-time job.

I don’t pretend to be an authority on this subject but the TV Links story in particular strikes me as faintly ludicrous given that, as far as I can tell, no actual content was stored on their servers. All they did was serve as a directory - a link to where the shows were being hosted!

Anyway, for a more balanced and succinct analysis of this story, I thoroughly recommend this TechCrunch post.
