Copenhagen Unlike

The Unlike network of online city guides recently added Copenhagen to its roster. Unlike is definitely the best English-language city guide I’ve found; it was invaluable when I was in Berlin. I’m told the mobile app works seamlessly (Apple named it as one of the top iPhone apps), but that aside I think what sets it apart is its unfussy, informative take on a city’s best shops, hotels, bars and places to unwind. In other words it doesn’t try too hard to be hip, resulting in something that’s functional, interesting and genuinely useful.

Go the whole hog

Spike Jonze directed this ad for GAP  a few years back. They ran it, but didn’t really run it. It aired in a few places and then they pulled it, presumably because it wasn’t ‘on message’ enough. Which is precisely the kind of thinking that ensures people’s perception of the brand stays lukewarm and non-committal. Go balls out, I say. Business is about risk, isn’t it? Twats.

Tony Takitani

I just found this trailer for a film called Tony Takitani over at sneakmove. The film is from 2004 and is based on a story by Haruki Murakami. It looks like a beautiful piece of work.

El guincho

This dude reminds me of a kind of tropical, blissful Panda Bear. You know when you get one song from an artist and listen to it 100 times a day and you’re still not bored a week later then you’re onto a winner.

Copenhagen Fashion Week

I wanted to do a nice write-up about Copenhagen Fashion Week but I didn’t get to any shows or parties this year, and then I could hardly find anything worthwhile linking to apart from a load of crap about Paris Hilton. Thankfully there was an exception to the rule – Refinery 29. They put together a couple of posts here and here which give a bit of insight into how it all went. Incidentally, the catwalk shots in that first post were all taken by a friend of mine called Sacha Maric who’s an awesome photographer.

I also saw something on the telly where some dude was saying that while the scene here is definitely pretty cool, a lot of designers are playing it safe and not coming with anything particularly outrageous or cutting edge. Anyone have any thoughts?

Chimp media monitoring

‘I went into WH Smith and asked the woman behind the counter if they sold bereavement cards. She said Yes, so I enquired whether I could get one in exchange for the Get Well Soon card I’d bought yesterday.’

Hurra! My favourite ad blogger has resurrected his painfully funny blog.

Obsolescence

Anyone who has ever visited the Arndale Centre in Luton, Bedfordshire, will agree with me when I say that little good can be said of shopping malls. Happily, it would seem the economic downturn is taking its toll on these ugly, soulless constructs that blight the outskirts of so many cities. This in turn is providing young architects and urban planners with interesting redesign opportunities.

MACAFRAMA Trailer from MACAFRAMA on Vimeo.

San Francisco’s Macaframa outfit have been generating a lot of buzz recently with their trailers for the fixie movie they’ve put together. The documentary/movie is apparently scheduled for a release next month. Check out hyr collective’s latest issue for a nice feature on the Macaframa team.
