Copenhagen quickly

>This Issue, (they sell nice things like cool books and t-shirts and pens) is having a ‘reopening’ street party this Friday from 2pm in Blågardsgade.

<Big developments over at Spoiled Milk. Russell is off to Zurich at the end of May to open a Swiss office, but in the meantime the guys have been rebranding. The new site is beautifully clean and superbly functional (though they haven’t got the portfolio up yet).

>A beautiful ’tilt effect’ video of the Copenhagen skyline. For those of you who’ve never been here, this is Copenhagen:

Street photography: someone’s going to get killed

Interesting how much more paranoid I felt taking some street shots back in London over the weekend compared to here in Copenhagen. I already posted about the crackdown by the Metropolitan Police and now Wired reports on a tussle in Middlesbrough between a couple of photographers and ‘some idiotic pseudo cops’ (see pic above) who attempted to detain them by pushing them and twisting their arms behind their back. The erosion of civil liberties back in my homeland and the ensuing difficulties faced by photographers is explored in more detail here.

Beaten to the punch

It’s a little bit embarrassing when a blogger on the other side of the Atlantic is writing about cool stuff right here in Copenhagen before me. But when that blogger is as engaging and humble as Kitsune Noir’s Bobby Solomon you can’t be too downbeat. Go check out his post about the new poster for the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, featuring everyone’s favourite cafe/record store owner.

New Yorkers in their apartments

An intriguing photographic exploration of New Yorkers in their homes, with an emphasis on who and what they can see out their windows. It looks like this started out as a more in-depth project with the subject encouraged to talk about their neighbourhood but, over time, it seems to have become a purely visual study. Would be cool to do something similar here in Copenhagen.

About

Design duo Little Fury have a nice and – for once – original ‘About’ page:

This makes me want to completely overhaul my blog with loads of cool graphics. Oh well.

Defining form

Copenhagen-based graphic designer Thomas Høedholt has collected some amazing images over at his visual notepad, Defining form.

I shop therefore I am

‘Unfortunately this new interest for interior design isn’t always very responsible. Our homes are filled with things that we do not really need. We are restless and buy more and more cheap products of bad quality. Things with a short life span, both in design and material. At the same time we throw away functioning things. Whatever happened to container finds and thrift stores? Products that could be given a new life and in that way save resources. The designer Satyendra Pakhale nails the problem when he says; “we can’t afford to buy cheap things”.’

And:

‘Traditional luxury consumption, as we define it now, will not provide the same status in the future as it does today. If one seeks attention, money is better spent (if you necessarily need to spend it) on something useful. Something that will benefit many people. Perhaps in the future giving will be more important than having. Are the companies, who survive on our consumption, prepared for this transition?’

An intriguing exploration of what it is to be a consumer today.
